Wait, hold on, we need to check our notes. Usually the premise is the other way around. Hmmm… no, that’s correct: The main character is a demon girl and her best friend archnemesis is a magical girl.

DEN-NOH COIL (DENNOU COIL) | URBAN LEGENDS MEET AUGMENTED REALITY

Den-noh Coil is probably THE most overlooked anime on this list. It’s also an extremely unique sci-fi series because it takes place in a setting where Google Glass actually became a thing.

OK, not really. Google Glass wasn’t going anywhere, even in fiction. We mean that AR (augmented reality) went mainstream in this setting instead of VR (virtual reality). Instead of wearing headsets and bodysuits to immerse themselves in a virtual world, people wear special glasses that allow them to see and interact with an augmented world overlaying the real one.

The show also lets its children characters be actual children and react to situations as children would. Which is kind of refreshing when you consider that most anime children act like they were just tiny adults.

PRINCESS PRINCIPAL | STEAMPUNK LONDON, SPIES AND CREATIVE ENGLISH DUBS

Sentai REALLY stepped up their dub game with this series. Since the setting exists in an alternative history where England split into two separate nations, every character speaks with the appropriate accent, including the Japanese ones.

Here’s the cool part: Not only do the Japanese characters speak English with Japanese accents, Sentai made the creative decision to KEEP the original audio intact when the Japanese characters were speaking with each other.

O MAIDENS IN YOUR SAVAGE SEASON (ARABURU KISETSU NO OTOME-DOMO YO.) | PUBERTY SUCKS (AND IS RELATABLY HILARIOUS)

The curious thing about adults is that some of them act like they’ve forgotten they were once teenagers. Probably because those years were awkward and embarrassing to the point that their brains deliberately scrubbed those memories into oblivion.

And who can blame them. Teenage years involve things like puberty and realizing you’re in love with your childhood friend or discovering that you like girls instead of boys or that you’re not as suave and mature as you thought you were or—

OK, it got a bit too real here. The point is that O Maidens in Your Savage Season is relatable and isn’t afraid to soothe those burns with character development and comedy. Besides, the series isn’t afraid to teach us the most important lesson of all:

Wait, hol’ up: Why are we recommending a sequel series instead of the original? Because it’s just that good, that’s why. 

Although UQ HOLDER! Is the sequel to Negima! (Mahou Sensei Negima!), it follows a different main character in the future, so you don’t HAVE to watch the original shows to understand what’s going on. 

However, if you do want to start from the very beginning, you can stream both Negima! and Negima!? (punctuation is extremely important; thanks, elementary school grammar class!) on HIDIVE before moving on to UQ HOLDER!
